after a string of releases in 2016, french journeyman and beat craftsman hugo lx returns on balance recordings with his first house long player. supposedly designed as a more traditional 3-tracks offering, the project progressively turned into a two parts album, reflecting on past, present and future events through organic electronic music, with the loss of a dear friend and mentor as the turning point. instead of a contemplative tribute piece, this effort focuses on storytelling, narrating crucial life moments through various song and interlude formats, colours and musical styles, producing a vaporous yet funky, jazzy and hiphop infused house music, flirting with soulful atmospheres and ambiant electronic textures.

death on the balcony s ‘tides of fortune has been the subject of relentless -track id- requests pleading us to reveal the name of the artist and track since be-at-tv streamed the bpm performance of lee burridge and matthew dekay back in 2015. joined on the ep by three other tracks there s a cohesive feel to the two friends vibe. mysterious melodies drift in and out of the hypnotic grooves on rivers of sound that could have soundtracked a star trek episode from the original series. 1700 miles is delicate and deep with a simple infectious vocal sample. don t be deceived though. when played on a club system the kick drum and bassline draw you in while the atmospheric elements send the listener to otherworldly places. we feel rather privileged as this track is mark’s first solo outing from dotb under his new moniker “caramelli” and dotbs first full length on all day i dream. mark’s back in the band for memories of the future which completes the release with its funky bass and trippy ambience. close your eyes and be transported.

2016 repress , having provided a remix for the label back in 2010 ethyl & flori now release their first full ep for the label, the last ninja kicks things off with an unmistakable old school tech-house feel which to us at fof recalled the classic architecture dj mix by terry francis with its punchy kick, sharp percussion and imbued uplifting warmth. fornjot by flori on the flip is a different proposition, although still deeply entrenched in a throwback to yesterdays production stylings, this is a much more techno orientated groove with the tracks repeated metallic bass riff anchoring the track in a gloriously hypnotic yet fresh way.

an obscure tape release discovery by red light radio founder and close friend of the label, orpheu de jong, led to music from memorys latest release. this two track 12inch highlights the work of electronic music pioneer joel graham, a san francisco based artist who self released two cassettes in 1984/85. originally recorded and performed live on pre-midi analogue equipment in 1982 as an outline for a live performance, these visionary tracks provoke much of the same sensibilities found in both contemporary dance music as well as in works of more established vanguard artists of the time. slowly unravelling and deeply hypnotic, joel grahams music seems to manifest a doorway to a profound new world and can be seen as a forerunner of what was to come in electronic music.
